LET’S IMAGINE DRAGONS

It’s been a while since I’ve discovered this band but I think the time has finally come to share them with you. At least, because now they have a video out. Imagine Dragons are newcomers from Las Vegas, Nevada. The guys have already released four (!) EPs and now are ready to impact with a full-length effort. The latest EP “Continued Silence” hit the shelves this March and was their first major label release (Interscope Records once again proved to be the most awesome label on the planet). Moreover, this time around the production duties were executed by Alex Da Kid, superproducer known for his fusion of hip hop and alternative rock influences (and for his amazing collaborator Skylar Grey). So, as you can rightfully expect, the sound on the record is a top notch.

“Continued Silence” might pretend to be an indie record but this style has just become a mainstream success with fun.’s “We Are Young” occupying worldwide charts. Which is actually a good thing for the guys because it can promise them a long-awaited commercial breakthrough. So far, there hasn’t been the better year for this than 2012. That’s been said I surely predict the single “It’s Time” to be a slow burner but a solid success. Actually, it sounds even too similar to fun. for me but, you know, ripping off everybody by everybody is always welcomed. So go for it!

The EP contains six songs, five of them are very good, solid, hook-packed lovely pop songs that suit each other perfectly. But the sixth one (the first on the record) is a monster. “Radioactive” is so head & shoulders above all the others that  their coherence even seem as a fault. Being the first on the disc, “Radioactive” sets the bar so high that other five songs just never live up to expectations. Anyway, they are still worth listening to.

“Radioactive” starts with an airy acoustic guitar riff but suddenly (and so damn pleasantly) explodes into a waterfall of loud drums which even make the effect of speakers blowing up. The soung of inhaling pumps me up every time I listen to the song. Hard and agressive vocals are packed with swag and rocker attitude shining through. When the frontman proclaims “This is it, THE Apocalypse” the song escalates into a stadium-sized (and stadium-worth) chorus that recalls both Alex Da Kid’s and Ryan Tedder’s brightest and most striking works. “Radioactive” is the type of a song that demands you to put it on repeat over and over again. That’s why, honestly, I can’t get it for what reason the label pushes “It’s Time” on the market instead. Sounding both familiar to radio standards and fresh and edgy, “Radioactive” would’ve made a great introduction of Imagine Dragons to a mainstream audience.

As for the “It’s Time” video, it actually makes me like the song more. It’s a little bit surreal, especially towards the end. This still is a solid effort and, let’s hope, it can be even a good thing. “It’s Time” might pave the way for a huge “Radioactive” success.

Dry the River - No Rest. Dry the River is a folk rock band from London who released their debut called “Shallow Bed” this march. Actually, they have a new single out but I’ve just come across this beautiful video so I’d start with it.

Some call Dry the River a british version of Bon Iver, let it be. “No Rest” video will definitely capture the attention of those who like watching sensitive guys ripping their hearts out in front of you (figuratively speaking, in this case, at least) and pouring out their soul. It’s very honest, very real. “No Rest” is like an emotional rollercoaster starting softly and tenderly but growing into the burst of feelings.

If you want to find a particular sense in the video and explain what’s going on, you will fail. “No Rest” visuals are based on emotions, it shows what the guys feel and feelings are always hard to logically process. You just need to absorb them and to live through it. Be a heart, not a mind.

The Shins - The Rifle’s Spiral. This march the band has released their brand new album co-produced by Greg Kurstin. Someone wants us to buy it so much that they’ve taken over Last.fm (or maybe it’s just on my page?) so we can see the guys’ promo everywhere. Critics underline that The Shins new effort has more slick and polished sound so I can assume it’s worth checking out.

But back to the video. The Shins are definitely huge Tim Burton’s fans. Especially, of “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. Stylistically, it’s a complete ripoff but I’d rather say “a homage”. For me, this technique is a classic already, so this is a different thing. The vid follows a weird plot about young sorcerer (or, maybe, a sorcerer’s apprentice?) constantly exercising his tricks to save a rabbit who is a big interest for some creepy guys looking like british gentlemen from an elite upper-class club.

The events are so inexplicable and illogical so you can’t predict what happens next. I got the director: I was doing the same thing as a child letting my imagination take over and do its thing while I was playing and creating some stories. I never knew where a plot was heading to. So this kind of video might seem strange and stoned but it’s exciting and I couldn’t wait to see what was gonna happen in the next second.

Lana returns a favor. Last year Kasabian visited BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge and sang Lana Del Rey’s breakthrough hit “Video Games”. Now they’re even going to release it on a special two-sides vinyl single, exclusively for Record Store Day.

This time around Lana came to the Live Lounge studio and paid back covering Kasabian’s sentimental “Goodbye Kiss”. I’m happy to say that the girl sounds just like on a record so, in other words, you’ll get to hear her hauntingly beautiful vocals that everybody fell in love with in the first place and won’t have to suffer through another dreadful “choking cat” performance.

Missy Higgins - Unshamed Desire. one of the most awaited comebacks (by me personally). the single is out on the april, 23, but you can check out the song now. a pretty little tune, a bit too heavy for the-before-missy, but still very fresh and upbeat. the third album ‘The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle’ is out in june.

Rita Ora - How We Do (Party). I don’t know why I am posting this here, but whatever, it’s fun! Rita’s got the look, she’s got the voice, so bother watching the vid. The song is so fuckin’ derivative, I just can’t, but whatever, it’s fun!

Though I haven’t downloaded it yet.

NELLY FURTADO IS BACK WITH “BIG HOOPS”

Nelly Furtado is finally back with an English-language single. Six years ago she released her smash album “Loose” that cemented both her and Timbaland’s careers and was massively influential, to say the least. Since those glory days music scene has changed radically. Nelly will be the first in a row of 2006 hit-makers who finally decided to release an album. No Justin, no Fergie (BEP is no Fergie), no Gwen (well, No Doubt is great too, but where are they still? We’re waiting).

“Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)” sounds like “Loose, version 2012”. It’s a hot urban track with a little drum’n’bass thrown in (thank God, it’s not dubstep, or I must say, Brit-step?). Nelly didn’t go all Gaga on us, stayed true to her r&b sound of the last English album. Moreover, she hooks up with quite a vet in the business, Darkchild, but guys managed to sound fresh, interesting and genuinely exciting.

Thumbs up to “Big Hoops”!

Rebecca Ferguson - Glitter & Gold. Well, here is another almost pointless Rebecca’s video. In fact, it even has a story unlike its predecessors. At least, a kind of. “Too Good To Lose” visuals were about nothing at all, but they still captured colourful and sunny spirit of LA and I wasn’t (almost) bored watching it. The new video is more entertaining, it has a message, but I’m not digging it much. I even like it less than the last one. But Rebecca still looks gorgeous and the song (as well as all the songs on her debut) is a total winner.

Take care of your soul…
